Germany's Chancellor Merkel comparison of the NSA spying program to that of the East German "Stasi" is important.

This week we heard reported that Angela Merkel had told President Obama that the NSA spying, particularly on her, reminded her of tactics used by the Stasi- East Germany's notorious secret police.

It's probably important for us to remember that East Germany was one of the most ruthlessly dictatorial members of the former Eastern Bloc controlled by the then Soviet Union. Too many people today don't realize the extent of the spying or its consequences to East German citizens. For someone that was a child growing up under that cloud it is not simple hyperbola; especially from a diplomat usually given to being more circumspect.
