It may seem strange to suggest that California is doing anything right but in a sense the way they're doing so many things wrong can be seen to fit into the idea of federalism.
After all, the Constitution's idea of states being allowed to go their own way within the broader confines of the Constitution's broad fences, guarantees experiments that both succeed and fail.
Each state being an experiment in the balance between freedom and government means that the mistakes will be made. The point being is that bad ideas discourage folks in business from being in that state and good ones encourage them to make a move to that one.
That's what's happening to the former Golden State. The misstep will be when the rest of the states or the shrinking few with good ideas, are asked to pay to support the mistakes and not let the failure occur that would lead to a rethinking of bad ideas.
The union and its resources are to be employed to help the states in natural disasters or to move forward in a limited way, not spread the consequences of a state's bad decisions over everyone else. When this happens, California will continue to be doing the wrong things and so will the federal government...ed
