USA Today has published a study that shows while nationally property values have dropped some 22%, property tax collections on this residential portion are up 3.1%.

It's almost certain that school district administrators will try and leverage the idea that in a recession they are being disproportionately harmed in order to get some type of advantage from the taxpayer.

After all, to paraphrase our next president's incoming chief of staff -- you do not wish to let any crisis pass as it's an opportunity to get things done you couldn't normally do.

We certainly need to improve the present economic situation for the schools but it's probably time to apply some of the logic we've been doing with Wall Street and the automaker CEOs and not give any more money until we see some changes in philosophy/personnel.

Oh yes, and maybe some benchmarks for improvement in performance.
