A Hearty Handclasp And Goodbye


We have been noticing some of the long faces at the local media as they stand on their front porches, waving sadly towards the retreating figure in the sunrise; their version of the cinematic "Shane" -- former House District 55 Representative Bernie Buescher.

Well, it does not surprise us to any great extent, since a couple of the folks in the media have been engaged in their version of a tickle party with the former representative for the last four years -- running endless stories breathlessly recounting his every exploit and eagerly attacking anyone who might present a challenge.


The problem with this adulation and protection was it was largely misplaced. This is not to say that he was an overtly bad legislator or in any sense that there was malice or self-enrichment.

The problem was a lack of either understanding of his own district and region or an overweening desire to be pleasing to the power brokers across the Great Divide.

It is for this reason that we altered the familiar metaphor of riding into the sunset to that of riding into the sunrise. We believe that the proper orientation is to the East.


We would agree with some that individual contributions to the area have been many and that Mr. Buescher on a personal level seems a good man. Nonetheless, at the level of policy this was not enough to ensure proper representation of his district.

Western Colorado in general and Mesa County in particular have many needs beyond and sometimes contrasting with those of Metro area lawmakers. A choice must usually be made, that being between some cooperation, thoroughly seasoned with caution and capitulation.


Listing the representatives accomplishments is important. Unfortunately they are outweighed by support for reckless spending programs and tax increases sponsored by the Governor and others. We wish the former representative health, wealth and happiness. In another area his policies would have been more appreciated, unfortunately they do not represent this one
