District 51 Frustrated by Test Scores -- Just Think How Upset the Kids Would Be If They Could Read the Newspaper

District 51 seems to be continuously amazed by the lack of connection between spending money on programs and raising student achievement.

You can read the Daily Sentinel story on the plummeting test scores by clicking anywhere on this text. At the same time you should be happy that you're not in middle school since you probably would not be able to read this text.

This may be unduly harsh but someone needs to get their head around the idea that teaching has more to do with technique and expectations than programs and expenses.

This does not come at an especially good time since the school district is about to ask for an approximate $200 million bond issue.

One of the only positive things that can be said about this issue is that it is probably more necessary than about 70% of the city of Grand Junction's 100 million dollar sales tax increase. Mind you, this is setting the bar pretty low.

If you're wondering where some of the kids are getting their lack of reading comprehension take a look at this quote from the District 51 superintendent,

"“In the past, teachers may have operated autonomously with the state-content standards,” Mills said. “We’re working toward the same instructional approach and terminology.”

If this is the instructional approach to English conversation presently being taught, I can understand why the students have trouble paying attention.
