Surprised That Energy Boom Alters Battlement Mesa Area-- Forget Area Was Originally Created by Energy Boom And Bust

An interesting article in today's Daily Sentinel points out that some seniors are leaving the Battlement Mesa area as it grows, due to energy development. Click this paragraph.

I can still remember when the last energy boom for oil shale collapsed and the empty houses in Battlement Mesa which had been built for oil shale workers, sat vacant.

One of the coworkers in my office in Denver was one of the first to move into the extremely cheap housing that included a golf course and recreation center which was being newly marketed as a senior retirement community.

Many of these individuals have seen significant appreciation in their home value since that time but it is always hard to see the tenor of an area change that you've been living in for some time.

But don't worry, the way the new oil and gas commission is operating those new people will be gone and house prices will be real low again.

We hope that doesn't happen -- especially to the seniors for whom their home equity may be a their most valuable asset.

Let's just hope the unconstitutionality ruling of the mill levy freeze that raised taxes on these same people survives scrutiny by the state's highest judicial bureaucrats.
