State to Raise Revenue with Speeding Tickets -- Remember Fines and Fees Do Not Require a Vote- Speed Zone Cameras Would Help Issue More Tickets

As one of the more stealthy ways to increase revenue for enhanced spending from the Colorado legislature this year they have chosen the methodology of raising fines on speeding and creating new works zone penalties for highway construction areas.

We reported some time ago that what this does is allow greatly enhanced fines for speeding in general and especially speeding in construction areas.

It will allow for these fines to begin up to four hours before any construction workers are actually present.

The Colorado legislative Council estimates generating some $14.7 million in revenue from this change for a discussion of this and links to the full text of the fine increase in the photo radar bills please click here.

The purpose of enforcement for speeding is safety, not the generation of revenue. One wonders how long it will be until the legislature begins to encourage officers to lurk behind billboards and under overpasses to help the state's bottom line.
