Catholic Order that Owns St. Mary's Encounters Problems with Legislature
An article posted on the Catholic Church centered Spero News is expressing concern about a Colorado House bill proposed by Representative Morgan Carroll (D).
According to the article, which can be read in full here, HB 1203 would block the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth from buying two non-Catholic hospitals in the Denver area. Denver Archbishop Charles Chaput has drawn attention to this bill, as well as HB 1173 as being a prejudiced block of Sister's from buying these two hospitals in this statement released last week.
The question here seems to be of the definition of material change.. In December of 2007, State Attorney General Suthers issued this finding, stating the under the current definition of 'material change,' the Sister's were within legal bounds to purchase one of the hospitals in question. HB 1203 is attempting to revise the definition found in C.R.S. 09-19-101.
We are not sure what is the driver of this issue, but we will post any info we receive that seems credible.
