In 1968, the Apollo 8 astronauts, orbiting the moon, read passages from the Old Testament Book of Genesis during a Christmas Eve television broadcast.

Astronaut Then vs Today's Model
Here is an interesting thought. What do you think the chances are that American astronauts might read verses from the Bible on national television today? Would there be protests, congressional hearings? Would American atheists demand equal time and have our astronauts read something from Christopher Hitchens? Take a moment and think of the distance between 1968 and 2008. In a generation, 40 short years something has went from moving and accepted to most likely prohibited. Has this change made us a better people or simply a less grounded one.
